Old Waterford, Circa 1720

18th Century Inspiration

Bringing history back to life with an elegant design inspired by the 18th century, Bummer Lamb Design specializes in historic home renovations. Our design team loves belonging to a community richly diverse in culture with roots buried in the past. The Old Waterford Home Renovation project allowed our team to showcase their knowledge and historic reverence of this region, giving the space the warmth and elegance that might have been found in a more predominant historic home dated back to the Fairfax Proprietary.

In the Old Waterford Home Renovation design project, Jennifer wanted to enrich the home by providing design lines, furniture, and finishes that gave nod to the home’s formative years while incorporating more comfortable touches than what the rural owners may have experienced when it was first built.

Patience, Commitment & True Partnership

It takes special people to invest in an old property such as this. The new property owners were just that, a true delight to work with. Patience, commitment, and true partnership were essential to the process, as we opened up the walls and authenticated the marks others have made throughout history. Bringing modern comforts and conveniences while being mindful and respectful of a home dating back to the Revolutionary era was a bit of an undertaking but one Jennifer and her husband were more than happy to take on. “Our commitment to the homeowners was to correct and bring authenticity to poorly done past renovations, and that our new work, would be done to look as though it had always been there.”

Bringing light into the home was a top priority. Jennifer and her team went room by room, crafting their plan to let in the light. Starting with the dining room. The space was part of a lackluster addition done in the late 1900s. They opened up the walls, added 2 pairs of French doors, reclaimed wood floors and beams, wood-paneled wainscotting, and gorgeous baroque wallpaper. The crowning touch in this space is the exquisite work of artist Isabelle Truchon. The finishes and textures she creates are stunning. From the mantle to the wainscotting, to the wine cabinet, they connect in perfect harmony. The once dark and stodgy dining room is a lively and enchanting entertainment space.

Historic Yet Modern Kitchen

Located in the basement of the home, the kitchen was once thought to be a service quarters fitted with a dirt floor and fireplaces used to cook the proprietor’s meals. The space was dark, drab, and cluttered, which was not going to work for the new lady of the house, a vivacious cook and entertainer. In addition to a fabulous chef-grade kitchen, the stone walls were opened up, and French doors were added, opening up the kitchen to a beautiful stone patio, giving birth to an inviting and festive entertaining space. They again found light.

The stone walls and beamed ceilings, some lovely historic features of the home, offered a hurdle that called for design innovations. Jennifer and her husband designed features allowing for ceiling light fixtures and electrical access where there was none, without disturbing these lovely features, a testament to the craftsmanship, trade, and ingenuity that made this home a shining success.
